Winter Blinds in Delhi: Keep Rooms Warmer and Let the Sun In

In winter, the best blind is the one you open at 10 am and close at 5 pm.
Most people think of blinds as summer protection. But in a Delhi NCR winter — cold nights, foggy mornings, weak sun — blinds can make rooms noticeably more comfortable. The trick is using them differently through the day.
How blinds help in winter
Windows are the weakest point for heat loss, especially single-glazed glass common in Indian flats. A blind creates a layer of still air between the glass and the room. That layer slows heat escaping at night and reduces the cold "draught" feeling near windows.
The daily winter routine
- Morning (fog, cold): keep blinds closed until the sun is up to hold the night’s warmth.
- 10 am to 3 pm: raise blinds on south- and east-facing windows to let the low winter sun warm the room.
- From around 4:30–5 pm: lower all blinds as soon as the sun weakens to trap the day’s heat.
Motorised blinds with a schedule do this automatically — useful if nobody is home in the day.
Which fabrics work best
- Blackout and dim-out fabrics are denser and insulate better than sheer fabrics.
- Thermal-backed fabrics add another layer of resistance.
- Honeycomb (cellular) blinds trap air in their cells — read honeycomb blinds in India.
- Zebra blinds insulate moderately when the solid bands are closed.
Fit matters more than fabric
Gaps let warm air escape. Inside-mount blinds that fit snugly, or outside-mount blinds overlapping the frame by 5–10 cm on each side, keep the air layer still. A blind that stops short above the sill loses much of its benefit. Our guide on mount types and light gaps explains how to minimise gaps.
Layering blinds and curtains
A roller blind plus a thick curtain in winter gives the best insulation of any common setup. The blind handles daytime light; the curtain adds warmth at night.
Safety with room heaters
Winter brings oil-filled radiators, fan heaters and halogen heaters. Keep any heater at least one metre from blinds and curtains. Never place a heater directly below a window with a lowered blind. If children or pets are around, choose cordless or motorised blinds.
Condensation and damp
Foggy mornings and warm rooms cause condensation on cold glass. Raise blinds for a while each day so moisture can evaporate, and wipe the glass if water collects. This prevents mildew on the fabric. See our damp-proofing tips.
Is it worth buying blinds just for winter?
A blind serves all year: heat and glare control in summer, privacy always, and warmth in winter. If you are choosing now, a blackout or dim-out roller for bedrooms and a zebra for living areas covers both seasons. Rollers start at ₹100 per sq ft and zebras at ₹120, GST included.
Quick winter checklist
- Close the gap between blind and sill — even 5 cm lets cold air pool into the room.
- Open sun-facing blinds by mid-morning, not at dawn when glass is coldest.
- Keep heaters well away from fabric and chains.
- Wipe condensation from glass daily so fabric stays dry.
- Consider a dense fabric for bedrooms where you feel the cold most at night.
These habits cost nothing and make the blinds you already have work noticeably harder through December and January.
Used this way, blinds help keep rooms comfortable through the coldest weeks.
FAQs
Do blinds really reduce heater usage?
They reduce heat loss through windows, which helps a room stay warm longer. The difference is most noticeable with snug-fitting, dense fabrics.
Should I keep blinds closed all day in winter?
No — open sun-facing windows in the middle of the day to capture free warmth, and close them before sunset.
