Privacy for Ground-Floor Flats: Blinds That Do Two Jobs

Day privacy is about the view in; night privacy is about the view through.
A ground-floor window in Delhi faces two different audiences: the pedestrian who glances in at 11 am, and the street lamp that turns your lit room into a screen at 9 pm. Most single solutions handle one audience and fail the other — the classic being a dark fabric that reads as a blackout bunker by day and still shows silhouettes by night the moment the room light comes on.
The physics, briefly
- By day: light is brighter outside than in, so anything with decent body — even light-filtering fabric — hides the interior. Views in are the problem
- By night: the room lights up and the street dims, so the interior projects outward through anything translucent. Transparency becomes the enemy
The configurations that win both shifts
- Zebra blinds: the natural two-shift fabric — sheer bands by day, slide the dense bands across at dusk; from ₹120/sq ft, from ₹2,400 at a standard 4×5 ft window. The living-room default for ground floors
- Dim-out or blackout rollers: bedrooms and any room you would rather not think about — full privacy both shifts, one gesture. From ₹130/sq ft
- The layering move: a light-filtering roller left at half height all day, lowered at dusk — cheap privacy discipline for balconies the family actually uses in the evening
Ground-floor specifics worth the extra thought
- The eye-line matters: pedestrians look into the lower third of a window first — a half-lowered blind protects the seating zone while the upper window stays open to light
- Balcony-facing rooms leak in both directions: neighbours across the block share the evening with you; zebra at balcony doors covers both the light and the sightline
- The street-light wash: sodium light at eye level is what makes bedrooms hard to darken — outside-mount overlap is the fix, per the dark bedroom system
Budget normally: privacy costs the fabric, not an upgrade tier — roller from ₹100/sq ft, zebra ₹120–₹190, GST included, 10 sq ft minimum, all tabled in the 2026 price guide. Ground-floor homes also qualify for the easiest AR flow — stand in the room at evening with the tool and watch what the street can see; it is the most honest design consultation in the category.
