What Are Blackout Blinds and Do They Actually Work?

A blackout blind is measured in millimetres of overlap, not just fabric.
Blackout blinds are window blinds made with a light-blocking layer so a room can be made dark in daylight. The fabric is the easy half; the reason some blackouts disappoint is almost always the edges, not the cloth.
How blackout blinds work
A blackout blind stops light in one of two ways:
- Coated or laminated fabric: a light-tight backing is bonded to the roller, so no light passes through the material at all
- Blackout lining on a face fabric: a decorative fabric (a roman or sheer-looking face) is backed with a blackout layer — the room looks soft, but reads dark
The mechanics, and why some "blackout" fabrics are really just dim-out, are covered in the full blackout guide.
The light-gap reality (why they "don't work")
A standard roller that sits inside the recess has a few millimetres of gap at each side and top — light leaks through those. That is not a fault; it is geometry. For a truly dark room you control the gaps:
- Outside-mount with 75 mm overlap on each side and above, so the fabric covers the recess itself
- Side channels on a cassette roller — rails that seal the edges for near-total darkness
- Cassette headrail to close the slot at the top
Bedroom next to a bright street? Ask for a cassette-and-channels blackout — the difference over a plain roller is dramatic. The mount maths is in the mount comparison.
Where blackout earns its keep
- Bedrooms and shift-worker sleeps: day feels like night for real rest
- Kids' and nurseries: reliable nap-time darkness
- Media and home-cinema rooms: no screen wash-out
- West-facing rooms: blackout fabric also carries a reflective backing that cuts heat
Do blackout blinds get hot, or block heat?
The reflective backing that stops light also reflects radiant heat, so a good blackout keeps a room cooler in summer, not warmer. Pair one with the insulating structure of honeycomb if cold is the issue — see bedroom blind ideas for the combos that work.
What blackout costs
Blackout blinds start around ₹195/sq ft on our card, with cassettes and side channels as add-ons. Configure a truly-dark bedroom setup on the blackout blinds page, and pick fabric in the fabric guide before you measure with the AR tool.
