Tall Windows and High Drops: The Reach Problem, Solved

On a tall window, the mechanism decides the fabric. On a short one it is the other way around.

Height changes everything in the blinds business, and most shopping advice quietly assumes a 5 ft window. Stairwells, double-height living rooms and tall landing glass have their own physics — and the deciding line is usually not the fabric, but the reach.

When the chain stops working

Standard chain operation is comfortable to roughly 6 ft of drop and 1.8 m of reach. Past that, three things happen at once: the chain's low point travels below usable height (a safety and practicality problem), fabric weight grows faster than the mechanism's comfort, and every daily operation becomes one person noticing, two people negotiating. That is where motorisation stops being a feature and becomes the specification.

Motorised at height — the maths flips at the top of the house

  • Stairwell or double-height glass: motor + remote from ₹3,000–₹6,500 per window, over a blind from ₹100/sq ft roller — the add-on is a smaller slice of a large blind's price than of a small one's
  • Reach-elimination: the remote lives wherever a person does; the extension ladder stops being window furniture
  • Schedules at scale: tall west glass moving on a 1:30 pm timer is the single best heat move in a double-height room — see the summer guide

Fabric at scale: what changes

  1. Weight and tube rating: a 9 ft drop is a tube-spec conversation — the fabric rides on hardware sized to it; this is manufacturing detail, not a choice you should have to police, but it is one more reason to buy where the specs of the maker are
  2. Stack depth: 20–25 cm of raised fabric at the top on tall drops; plan valance and fan lines around it
  3. Dust at height: the cleaning routine now requires the blind to be lowered to the cleaner — which is another argument for motor, or for scheduling cleaning with the one annual full-lower

The short spec

Tall glass lands on motorised rollers or zebra, sized honestly, with channels only where the room begs darkness. Costs ladder normally: the blind by area (roller from ₹100/sq ft, zebra ₹120–₹190, GST included, tables in the 2026 price guide), the motor per window. Send a photo of the full height with a person standing in it — scale is famously lost in hallway conversations, and the Block E, Mangolpuri team sizes stairwell jobs weekly.
