"Motorised", "electric" and "smart" describe the wiring, the control and the app — three different questions.

Motorised blinds are a moving part of any modern Indian home now — but the words "motorised", "electric" and "smart" get used interchangeably when they answer three different questions: how is it powered, how do you control it, and does it connect to an app.

Motorised vs electric vs smart

  • Motorised: any blind with a tubular motor inside the roller tube instead of a chain — the umbrella term
  • Electric: usually means the same thing, but people say it when the motor is wired to mains rather than battery-powered
  • Smart: a motorised blind with wireless control you can drive from a phone app or voice assistant, on schedules or scenes

How they are powered — the real choice

Battery (rechargeable tubular motors) are the default for homes: no electrician, no chasing the wall, and a charge lasts months on a daily-use blind. Wired/mains motors suit new builds, permanent installations and motorised skylights that run all day. Retrofit is genuinely easy — an existing roller can take a tubular motor, which is what makes buy motorized blinds an upgrade rather than a full replacement. The mechanical detail is in the motorisation guide.

How you control them

  1. Remote: a wall or handheld button — simplest, no app, no wifi
  2. App + wifi hub: phone control from anywhere, scheduling (open at sunrise, close in afternoon heat)
  3. Voice: pair with Alexa or Google Assistant for "close the bedroom blinds" — the smart layer
  4. Sensor: sun or temperature automations for glass-heavy rooms

Start with remote or app; add voice later from the same hardware.

Where motors are worth it (and where they are not)

They earn their keep on high or hard-to-reach windows, skylights (essentially mandatory — see skylight blinds), wide sliders, and bedrooms on a schedule. A single small kitchen window rarely needs one — a cordless chain does the job for less.

What motorised blinds cost

Think of it as fabric plus a motor. The blind itself is priced normally — motorised fabric from about ₹220/sq ft — and each tubular motor is a flat add-on per blind (battery vs wired and the control system change that add-on, not the per-foot rate). See live totals per window on the motorised blinds page, then decide the control layer.
