How to Wash Roller Blinds at Home (Without Ruining the Fabric)

Most roller blinds are ruined by cleaning, not by dirt.

Roller blinds are the easiest blinds to keep clean, but they are also easy to damage with the wrong method. Hot water, harsh detergent or rolling them up wet can leave permanent creases, water rings or a stiff, faded patch. Here is the safe way, from weekly dusting to a full wash.

Step 1: Know your fabric

Check the label or your order details. Most modern roller fabrics are polyester or PVC-coated and tolerate gentle water cleaning. Blackout fabrics have a coated back that must not be scrubbed. Natural-look or linen-texture fabrics are more delicate. If in doubt, test any method on the bottom corner first.

Step 2: Regular dusting (every 1–2 weeks)

In Delhi NCR, dust settles fast. Regular dusting means you will rarely need a deep wash.

  • Lower the blind fully so the fabric is flat.
  • Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on the lowest suction, working top to bottom.
  • Or use a microfibre duster or a clean, dry soft-bristle brush.
  • Do both sides if the back faces a dusty window.

Step 3: Spot cleaning marks

For fingerprints, a splash of tea or a small mark:

  1. Mix a few drops of mild liquid soap in lukewarm water.
  2. Dip a white microfibre cloth, wring it until almost dry.
  3. Dab — do not rub — the mark, working from the outside in.
  4. Rinse the cloth in plain water and dab again to remove soap.
  5. Leave the blind lowered until fully dry.

Rubbing spreads the stain and can lift the coating, leaving a shiny patch.

Step 4: Deep washing (once or twice a year)

Only for fabrics that allow it. Kitchen blinds often need this after a year of cooking.

  1. Remove the blind from its brackets. Take a photo first so you remember the chain side.
  2. Unroll it fully on a clean bathroom floor or in a bathtub.
  3. Wash gently with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft sponge, in the direction of the weave.
  4. Rinse with a hand shower on low pressure until no soap remains.
  5. Dry flat or hanging — never rolled, never in direct harsh sun. Rehang it lowered so the fabric dries straight.

Keep water away from the tube, bottom bar mechanism and any motor.

Three mistakes that ruin roller blinds

  • Rolling up while damp — causes creases and mildew inside the roll.
  • Hot water or bleach — shrinks fabric unevenly, fades colour and breaks down coatings.
  • Machine washing — almost always creases the fabric permanently.

Special cases

Blackout blinds

Clean only the front face with a damp cloth; wipe the coated back very gently. Scrubbing creates pinholes of light. More in our blackout blinds guide.

Kitchen grease

Use a cloth with a little dishwashing liquid diluted in lukewarm water, dab, then rinse-dab. Grease comes off fabric far more easily if cleaned monthly.

Mould spots after monsoon

Dab with a mild solution of white vinegar and water (1:3), rinse-dab, then dry fully with the window open.

When to replace instead of wash

If the fabric has yellowed, become brittle, or the edges have frayed, cleaning will not bring it back. A replacement roller blind starts at ₹100 per sq ft, made to your existing size. See our full guide on cleaning every type of blind.

Done regularly, these few minutes keep the fabric looking new for years and protect the warranty, which excludes damage from harsh cleaning.

FAQs

Can I use a steam cleaner?

Not on most roller fabrics — heat and moisture together can warp the fabric and loosen the adhesive on the tube.

How often should roller blinds be cleaned?

Dust every one to two weeks, spot clean as needed, deep wash once or twice a year at most.
