Front Roll vs Back Roll Blinds: What's the Difference?

Buy a roller blind and you will be asked one question most people have never considered: should the fabric roll off the front of the tube or the back? It is a small detail with visible consequences.

Back roll (standard roll)

The fabric comes off the top of the tube, away from the glass, hanging close to the room-side of the headrail.

• Light: the fabric sits a little further from the glass, so light leaks around the edges more
• Look: the classic, unrolled-fabric-first appearance most people expect
• Clearance: keeps distance from window handles — useful when the recess is tight
• Best for: general rooms, sheer and sunscreen fabrics

Front roll (reverse roll)

The fabric comes off the bottom of the tube, toward the glass.

• Light: fabric sits closer to the glass and close to the recess edge — slightly better light block
• Look: the fabric conceals the tube, a cleaner face to the room
• Clearance: needs a deeper recess or an outside mount to clear handles
• Best for: blackout setups, hiding the roller mechanism
