Buying Wooden Blinds Online: Basswood, Sizes & Real Rates

Wooden blinds bring warmth and real-slat elegance that no fabric quite matches — and they are also the easiest blind to buy badly online. Three decisions protect you: the wood, the slat size, and the mount.

Real basswood vs faux wood

• Real basswood: light, fine-grained, takes stain beautifully, the premium choice for living rooms and studies. Basswood is dimensionally stable, which matters most in a warm climate.
• Faux (PVC) wood: heavier and moisture-proof — the correct pick for kitchens and bathrooms where real wood would swell

Buying wooden blinds online means trusting the description — insist on "real basswood" or "natural wood" if you want genuine timber, and choose faux wood for any room that gets steam.

Slat width: 25 mm or 50 mm

25 mm slats read fine and traditional and suit smaller windows; 50 mm read modern and show more view and light when open — the usual choice for living rooms and large glazing. Size and width limits (the online trap)

Wood slats are strong but heavy, so a single wide panel has a practical ceiling — very broad openings usually want two blinds on one headrail rather than one giant one, which also stops mid-span sag. Confirm your width against the size chart; anything unusual is exactly what made-to-measure exists for.

Warp-proofing for Indian summers

1. Specify sealed, moisture-resistant finishes on all six faces of each slat
2. Sun-facing windows get a good blackout or reflective liner behind the slats — heat is what warps wood
3. Leave a few millimetres of clearance so slats never rub the frame when they expand

Mount and measure

Wooden (venetian) blinds almost always go outside the recess or deep enough inside to clear the frame and handles — 75 mm overlap outside is the safe default, per the mount guide. Measure width and drop at three points and take the smallest inside-recess number, exactly as in the measuring guide.
