How to Judge Blind Fabric Before You Buy: Swatches and Daylight

Screens lie in one way. Swatches in your own window lie in none.
No product category is harder to buy from a screen than window fabric, because the product's entire function is to hold light, and screens can only pretend at light. Here is how to judge fabric truthfully — in ascending order of getting it right.
The three lies, in order of expense
- The website photo lie: product photography is lit to flatter, and a fabric's colour in a studio box has no relationship to its colour filtering 2 pm Delhi light
- The showroom-light lie: even honest showroom white light is not your window; the same ivory glows warm in morning sun and cool on a grey afternoon
- The small-swatch projection problem: at 20 cm a texture reads "subtle"; at 1.2 m of drop, on your wall, it becomes the pattern
The test that beats all three
Get the sample to your own window at the right hour. Every serious maker keeps swatches precisely so this is possible; hold the sample against the glass at the hour the room lives, then against the wall beside the frame. Ten minutes, both verdicts — glow, texture, match. This single habit prevents the entire remake category called "I thought it would look different".
What to feel while you have it in hand
- Drape: fold a corner — does the fabric crease sharply (crisp, modern roller look) or fall soft? Your wall has one of those aesthetics, not both
- Wipe test: kitchen candidates should forgive a thumbprint; give them the chance
- Hold against light: what you see backlit is what privacy you actually get by day — the transparency question answered physically, per the privacy guide
How to do this in Delhi NCR
The Block E, Mangolpuri showroom runs the fabric rail against real daylight — a normal window, not a lighting rig — and keeps a sun-side and a north-light corner for exactly this decision. Walk-ins are welcome Mon–Sat 10am–7pm, and the counter will hand you five candidates for your light rather than fifty for the wall. Then the numbers, as always: roller from ₹100/sq ft, zebra ₹120–₹190, GST included, 10 sq ft minimum — the full tables in the 2026 price guide, ready before you arrive if you like.
